“The Terroir”
The area chosen for the vines is in the hilly stretch of southern Piedmont which stands between the valley of the Po in the North and the Appenine Mountains in the South, at an altitude that varies between 150-300 meters above sea-level.
The vines favour a warm and sunny site with chalky soil, rich in clay and loam.
The soil of Monferrato and its underlying rock come from deep marine sediments. Indeed, it is still possible to identify the sea shoreline in areas where it changes from pale loam to darker sand.
It is the nutrient –poor limestone soil of this particular “terroir”which gives rise to the distinctive characteristics of the wines with their rich and fruity notes. To this happy combination we can add the climate, the indigenous vines and the tradition of a thousand years of wine-making.
In Monferrato the grapevines usually bud in April and come into flower during the first days of June. The red grapes ripen throughout August with the harvest generally taking place in the first days of September. The last of the grapes, depending on age and variety, are harvested in October.
